Navigating a Toxic Workplace with the C.A.R.E.® Framework

In my last edition, we explored how positive self-talk becomes your inner anchor especially in moments when life feels too much.

That message was part of my 4-part series unpacking the C.A.R.E.® framework:

Choose to be Positive

Acknowledge Your Emotions

Reframe Your Mind

Embrace Positive Self-Talk

If you’ve missed the earlier parts, I invite you to catch up Because today, we wrap it all up by showing how each piece of the C.A.R.E.® framework comes to life when facing one of the toughest professional stressors:

⚠️ A Toxic Workplace

Whether it's command-and-control leadership, fear-based environments, or deeply political cultures — toxicity eats away at our mental and emotional well-being.

I’ve been there. I know how draining it is. The sleepless nights. The loss of confidence. The heavy emotional weight you carry home.

But here’s the truth:

You can navigate a toxic workplace without losing yourself. And the C.A.R.E.® framework can be your anchor.

🙋“Can C.A.R.E.® Framework Really Help in a Toxic Culture?”

This is a common question I get.

The answer, drawn from my own lived experience, is a resounding YES.

Here’s how I personally used the C.A.R.E.® framework to stay grounded in a toxic workplace and how you can, too:

Choose to be Positive

Choosing positivity doesn’t mean pretending everything is okay. It means holding onto hope even when the environment feels dark. It means reminding yourself: “This situation does not define me.”

It’s about protecting your energy and focusing on what uplifts — not what drags you down.

Acknowledge Your Emotions

It’s normal to feel:

  • Frustrated

  • Demotivated

  • Even undervalued, unappreciated

Acknowledging these emotions gives you permission to feel — without shame — so you can begin to move forward.

For me, that meant seeking healthy coping mechanisms, practicing self-care, and leaning on supportive relationships inside and outside of work.

Reframe Your Mind

Instead of feeling powerless, I shifted my focus to what I could still control:

  • My own attitude and actions

  • The impact I could still make, no matter how small

  • The lessons I could extract from every challenge

  • The genuine connections I could nurture with colleagues who shared my values

These shifts helped me reclaim a sense of purpose — even in a place that felt soul-crushing.

Embrace Positive Self-Talk

Toxic workplaces chip away at your self-worth. That’s why positive self-talk isn’t fluffy — it’s essential in preserving identity, self-esteem and well-being. By nurturing a kind, compassionate and affirming inner dialogue, I remind myself of my inherent worth.

“I am capable.”

“I am more than this job.”

“I deserve better — and I can choose better.”

“My worth isn’t defined by someone else’s approval.”

Because in places where voices tear you down, your own voice must rise up stronger.

❗But Let’s Be Clear: C.A.R.E.® Doesn’t Mean Staying in Toxicity

Applying the C.A.R.E.® framework isn’t about tolerating toxic environments forever. It’s about staying mentally and emotionally anchored while you figure out your next move.

When the culture no longer aligned with my values — when it compromised my well-being — I made the bold decision to walk away.

And I have zero regrets.

Because no paycheck is worth your peace of mind.

🧠 Sanity is not a luxury. It’s a necessity.

💛 Leaving isn’t failure. It’s self-respect.

🌱 From My Journey to My Mission

After experiencing multiple toxic workplaces, I knew I wanted to create change.

That’s why I now dedicate my work — through keynotes, coaching, and training — to help organizations build positive cultures where people don’t just survive... they thrive.

Because every challenge hides a gift. Can you find yours?
